Most of our classes are composite Y7/8. Most students will remain with the same teacher for their two years at Kamo Intermediate although we do make a few changes, for a number of reasons, each year.
Our character classes include:
● Boys Only
● Thinkers Plus
● Sports Classes
Often demand outweighs the number of character classes offered, therefore expressions of interest are needed at the enrolment interview if you would like your child to be considered for one of the special character classes.
Preference will be given to those who enrol before the end of Term Three.
Bilingual Classes Students will learn through the context of Te Reo Maori me ona tikanga. Both classes are composite Year 7 and Year 8. Classes work collaboratively enhancing their learning of Te Ao Maori. The main focus for these classes will be high levels of oral fluency of Te Reo Maori via second language acquisition, and it is our expectation that this learning will be continued at home. We have expectations that our classes will feed into our Kapa Haka roopu, to consistently maintain the richness of literacy that comes from karakia, waiata, moteatea and haka. Each of our students will start or continue a Te Reo Maori journey of their own, and through a focussed approach to Te Reo Maori me ona tikanga, our overarching vision is that they will enjoy academic success as Maori.
Thinkers Plus Classes Students will need to be highly motivated and prepared to use their initiative, taking full responsibility for their learning. Students will aim to achieve “best” results in all areas of school life and the wider community. With a passion in at least one learning area, students will be encouraged to pursue their personal goals through Passion-Based Learning. They will be strategic learners who are also responsible risk-takers, trying different approaches to learning. Making mistakes is a key factor of learning; these students will exhibit resilience and have the ability to “bounce back”, demonstrating a growth mindset. Students will be able to work collaboratively with others, while also being an independent thinker and worker. Curiosity, and wanting to know more, is an extremely important quality as this guides students to being the “change leaders” of our world. Parents and Caregivers will need to express their interest at the enrolment interview if they would like their child to be considered for the Thinkers Plus class.
Boys’ Class We offer a Year 7 & 8 composite boys only class. Due to a disparity in 2018 between the number of girls and boys, we formed our first boys class. We continue to offer it as a choice due to the success of the learning environment.
Sports Class Like the majority of our classes, they are composite Year 7 & 8 classes. This class type suits students who have a passion for, and an interest in learning through the context of sport. Students don’t need to be top athletes to apply for this class. If interest exceeds the numbers we can accommodate in our character classes, we will have a selection process.
