Lots of positives for our wonderful school during the past week or so – let’s celebrate!

Our Y7 Mathex team, coached by Sue Holmes, won the Northland Mathex Championship at Whangarei Boys High School last Thursday afternoon.  With approximately 50 teams from all over Tai Tokerau, this is a wonderful achievement for our students.

Harper Gray, Maya Raven, Mika Lumbera and Tahir Te’o  were great ambassadors for our school.  Not only did they win the Year 7 cup, they answered all questions correctly. A fantastic result.

Our other Y7 and Y8 teams were respectfully placed also.

You are aware that we had a mufti day on Friday to raise money for the annual Northland Rescue Helicopter appeal.  We were hoping to raise $1000 and I’m proud to say we raised $1600.  Thank you to the families who so generously gave substantial amounts to support this great cause.

Deputy Principals Lisa Ferris and Pamela Abercrombie took some students to the local radio station, More FM and presented the money to Flash, Toast and John.  We managed to get a short amount of airtime in which our own Channel K was promoted.

Additionally we are grateful to those who donated goods for the Salvation Army.  These were also delivered last Friday and car boots were packed with a huge array of goods.  Check out our facebook page for photos:)

Athletics finals are taking place this week.  Yesterday we had the 100 and 200m finals and today we start the field events.  These are taking place at lunchtime and you are welcome to come along and support your tamariki if you know they are competing in an event.

Saturday is a huge day for our Kapa Haka Roopu when they compete at the Regional Primary and Intermediate Competition (Maranga Mai E Te Iwi).

This event starts at 8:00am at Kensington Stadium.  Our rooupu, Te Puia O Kamo perform at 4:30pm and it would be wonderful to have a huge contingent of our KIS community there to support them.  They have been, and still are, training very long hours and we hope their efforts and commitment pay off come Saturday.

On December 3 we are having our graduation dance for the Y8 students.  Tickets will be $10 and available from next week.  It has been a year like no other and it will be nice to celebrate, with the students, their two years at Kamo Intermediate School.

I have been having conversations with a number of Y8 students recently as they talk with me about their application for a principal stripe.  I really enjoy these conversations as the students have the opportunity to showcase their talents, learnings, achievements and dispositions.  Our Graduate Profile features heavily in their application and I encourage you to speak with your children regularly about how they are tracking along on their journey to be proficient in all areas of it.  As a reminder, the capabilities/dispositions/values we focus on include:  Sense of Belonging, Curiosity, Respect, Healthy Well Balanced Lifestyle, Communication, and High Expectations.

Enjoy your week everyone.
