Lit Quiz

4-4-2011

On Friday the 1st of April (April Fools Day!) eight of the schools best literacy (that means books) kids in the school headed down to Kerikeri Primary School for the Northland Lit Quiz. There was a lot at stake. 1st place won a trip to Wellington to participate in the New Zealand final.

There were ten categories, each had ten questions. The first category was animals. We did okay, scoring 6 out of 10. Then we had the babies round. We weren't expecting it, but we did quite well. We won the book knowledge round which was also our joker round so we got double points. We all got a free book each and to top it off I won 5 dollars in one of the individual questions.

In the end it was very close. Our team came 4th. only 2.5 points away from third and 6 po
ints away from 1st. We didn't win but we still walked away very happy.

Soccer Coaching

4-4-2011

Soccer Soccer Soccer!
One of the most played sports in the world and we were lucky to get taught the basic skills needed to play it by Owen Howard, a coach from Football Federation.

But we started off with not even using a ball! We were in a small square and had to run around until we were told to stop and find a free space, with lots of space around us. Then we started with basic drills like passing and dribbling. Finally we had a game where we all faced each other in groups varying from 1 to 7. We had games against each other and had lots of fun. Room 11 had a amazing time!

Readers Writers Festival

16-5-11

On Wednesday the 11th of May Tim and I headed down to Auckland to take part in the 2011 Readers Writers Festival. Where young writing enthusiasts get the chance to listen to some very famous writers tell them about how to become a great writer.

The first guest was Meg Rosoff. She has written many books but her first book was rejected for unmentionable reasons (hehehe writers secret) but she carried on to have many great successes. She told us how fate has had a very big affect on her life and how she came to be a writer. It was interesting she has had a funny life.

Then Garth Nix and Sean Williams came. I was excited because Garth Nix writes one of my favourite series, The Keys to The Kingdom Series. They were mostly there to tell us about the experiences they had Co-writing there new book Trouble Twisters. Afterwards they were signing books along with Meg Rosoff so I got my Keys To The Kingdom books signed.

After some lunch we continued with the speeches and Brian Falkner had time to entertain us. After some interesting shorts about his books he showed us the Neuro cap which shows us what your thinking. A boy had some unmentionable thoughts (hehehe another writers secret) and it was an interesting talk followed by a long drive home. All in all. A really good day.

Goal shooting realay

30-5-11

The whistle blows and I watch as the 1st basketballer runs to the hoop and shoots, getting it in first time. They run to the next person, hand them the ball and the band. I watch the 5 teams run across the courts then the first person runs to the hockey goal. In a green shirt. No! I watch as Nikau and Kowhai run after Rimu but then I see a flash of blue and Tawa is at the hockey goal and shooting after the other syndicates. I watch the rugby people sprint up the field and then frisbee then soccer and then me. I kick the soccer ball through the goal, pass the band to frisbee thrower then run and sit down in the line then, the last person arrived and we were finished! We came in 4th place but we still managed to beat Matai. Now for some sad news, Mrs Gunson our awesome teacher is leaving for ever yes for EVER, to go to Maturau Intermediate School! We are extremely sad to see the best teacher in K.I.S to go! By Daniel M and Tim S

Lunchtime Sports- Soccer

21-06-11

Lunchtime Sports-Soccer

Last Thursday our class participated in the K.I.S lunchtime sports. We were playing against Nikau B, a worthy team who challenged us immensely and pushed us to our limits.

The two teams were equal in the first half the ball traveling up and down the field but then came the moment every team dreads Kevin broke through our line of defense and scored past Dion, our goalkeeper.  The  whistle blew signaling half time and our team huddled together to discuss tactics.

When the second half began we looked like scoring several times when they made mistakes in their defense but we failed to capitalize on them. Then we began to tire and lose our rhythm and it was all we could do to stop them scoring another goal. Eventually the full-time whistle went and we walked off the fields tired and defeated. But we still gave Nikau a cheer and shook hands. We may not of won the soccer but we still had a great time.

Extensions

5-7-11

Science Extension.

Science Extension is one of the coolest extensions at K.I.S and I am lucky enough to be part of this exclusive group of scientists. The science room is where you'll find me every Thursday afternoon and I could be doing anything from finding out the colours used in M&M's or testing the PH of acids and alkalis. We are always laughing and sometimes Mr Kivell sets us challenges like finding out what certain substances (like a fine white powder that was found by Mr Smith in Rebeca's bag, just kidding) are by testing their reaction to acids. I really enjoy Science Extension and I am happy to be a scientist.

Spanish Extension.

Spanish Extension is a special class to learn Espanol (Spanish) and there are only limited spaces in this awesome Extension. Mrs Parry is our teacher in a reasonably sized classroom but she does not accept anything un-channel-K or bad or she will kick you out.I am happy to be accepted in this amazing class.

Syndicate Rugby

23-8-11

At the moment at KIS we are in the middle of our Inter-Syndicate Rugby Competition and so far the Tawa Y8 boys team has not lost a game. O.K we may have only played one game but we're still undefeated, beating Kowhai 25-5. I was one of the players in that game so I can tell you what it is like from a players perspective.

The ball came flying towards me and I snatched it out of the air and made a break for the line, unfortunately a defender got there first and his hands wrapped around my waist dragging me to the ground. I stuck the ball out behind me and slowly stood up as the game raged around me, but then the ball flew out to Dion on the wing and he broke past the defender who, unluckily for him was  in his way (poor defender) and scored the opening try of the match.

It carried on this way until Kowhai got revenge to make it 20-5 but then we scored one last time and the game was over. WooHoo victory is ours!

Youth Summit

13-9-11

What do you get when you cross 600 kids, 3 speakers and a whole lot of potential? That's right, you get the Whangarei Youth Summit for 2011.

To start off the day, 72 Kamo Intermediate children were crammed onto 2 buses and driven to WIS where we joined hundreds of other students from schools all over Whangarei. Then we were led in to the hall by Mr Smith who had the daunting task of looking after 72 kids single-handedly. After a few performances the first speaker Jonnie Black came on stage.

He told us about his life and how he was a mischievous child until he joined the Cool Skool's Peer Mediation program. He also told us about the road to success and how it is never straight and there will always be bumps in it.

Next up was World Champion BMX rider Sarah Walker who came from a town of around 7'000 people and how there was only 2 people in the whole town who rode BMX. Her and her brother. She went on to tell us about how she once broke her hand just before a World Cup and still raced in it. Amazingly she was that years World Champion.

We were allowed  out for a quick lunch before we moved on to the final speaker of the day Marcus Akuhata Brown. He told us how he went from wanting to drop out of school to being the only New Zealander at a world youth convention and then they elected him their leader. He has also met Prince Charles and been invited to The White House to have breakfast with President Barrack Obama.

All of the speakers have led interesting lives and they were very entertaining. I thought that the Youth Summit was a great and positive experience for me.

Matapihi Exhibition

28-11-11

On Thursday afternoon Room 11 were let in to the 2011 Matapihi Exhibition which showcases all the marvelous work that all the Kamo Intermediate students have done in Specialists this year.

I only had one thing there which was my Christchurch postcard, but I saw many other works of art that were created by my friends.

At the Exhibition there were three different activities each day. My group started off exploring the hall looking at the extensive collection of wooden dinghies and sailing yachts, postcards made on the computers, handmade works of art, 3D drawings and amazing musical organs and buzzer games.

Afterwards we went up on to the stage and entered the intense paper box making studio. You got a square piece of paper and after various folds and cuts you ended up having a exquisite paper half box.

Then we moved on to Mrs De Bruin who demonstrated how to use a sewing machine that could so patterns in to fabric by itself all we had to do was tell it what to write! We each had a turn programming the machine but unfortunately we didn't have time to see it in action.

The Matapihi Exhibition was great but I wish I had more time there!

I-Devices at KIS

1/5/12

I-Devices at KIS

The wonder of  apple i-devices has hit shores of KIS.

Anybody can bring in an I-Pod, I-Pad or Mac to use in class. We use the internet or specific apps (e.g. Dictionary, Pages, Keynote and Number). We can quickly search and find information for nearly everything!

We are going great and are enjoying the technology. We have to give them to Mr Witten and he will connect us to the network. We love it and hope to keep it that way.
