CREATIVE LIFE AT K.I.S
(This article appeared in KidzBiz Student Newspaper - Edition 2 2004)

Part of what makes Kamo Intermediate School "The Best In The World" is its diverse range of Extension Programmes.

Our school has an awful lot to offer us and we take this up by taking part in an extension group activity. Before you can start experiencing the opportunities available, you have to apply yourself by displaying all your great qualities on one piece of paper. (Yes! The dreaded application form!)

Some students didn’t just rely on their great qualities, instead they went the extra mile and made the tutors’ cakes and ran around doing jobs and all sorts of bizarre things!!

At the end of the selection process, the moment of truth arrives! 236 wildly excited students turn up at their chosen areas of passion and creativity, ready to have a heap of fun and experience, an awesome range of diverse opportunities!!! (Boat-Building, Creative Foods, Mathematical Puzzles, Creative Arts, Philosophy for Children, KIS Komuniti FM Radio Station and many, many more!)

ENRICHMENT-EXTENSION PAMPHLET - 2014

12th March - 2014

At Kamo Intermediate, we endeavour to inspire students to learn, to help them uncover their hidden talents and to challenge them to strive for excellence. To do this, we try to provide students with as many opportunities as we can. These Enrichment-Extension programmes are not taught in normal classwork and ANYONE can apply to be a part of these groups.

Teacher “nominated” groups are recommended students who, by ability and positive attitude to schoolwork, show that they deserve and will make the most of the opportunity.
These are Teacher Nominated Groups:
Maths Extension (Year-8’s have been already selected), KIS WEBslingers (Website Blogging).

Outside of these Enrichment-Extension groups we also have:
Kapa Haka - Day ZERO Lessons (dance, music, drama) - KIS Komuniti FM - KIS Photography Club - Pasifika Island Educational Tours . . . and many more.

2014 MATH EXTENSION

with Mr EPSKAMP

MATH EXTENSION
Day One to Day Four: 9.00am - 10.20

This is a teacher nominated Extension for Year-8 students. The previous years top Year-7 Math Students (2013) are selected for this group. In previous years, the students had maths every Monday to Thursday morning and had to sacrifice going to specialists classes during that time. This year with school-wide Math now being taught every morning from Day 1 to Day 4, these students don’t miss out on as much.

BOATBUILDING

with Mr BROWN

BOATBUILDING : ENRICHMENT-EXTENSION
Friday's 11.10am - 3.00pm

GROUP 1: The participants in this group will have the opportunity to construct “easy-to-build” plywood dinghies.
If you are able to pay for the materials required for a hull, you can have a boat for yourself. You also have the option of joining this group as a “helper”.
If you do wish to have a boat of your own, please say so on your application form.
(please see Mr Brown for a copy of the study plans of the dinghy, and also the costing of a boat)

GROUP 2: This group will finish restoring a P Class Yacht. You will learn about small boat maintenance - painting, fitting out and rigging etc.

Qualities required for Boatbuilding…
●   Very accurate, careful and tidy
● You need to be mature and sensible with expensive marine glues and other materials
●   Able to work in a group
● Able to concentrate and stay on task with minimal supervision
●   A strong sense of pride and commitment – being prepared to stay with this group for the rest of the year
●   An understanding that the “finished product” may not be your own
●   Have a keen interest in boats and boating
