BLACK STICKS WOMEN vs ARGENTINA
International Test
K.I.S GIRLS 1st XI vs OREWA COLLEGE
Northland Hockey Stadium - Kensington
Saturday 26th March - 2OXI
Saturday the 26th of March, the Women Black Sticks were playing the first of 3 International Tests against World Champions and No.1 Women's hockey team Argentina. Our own KIS Girls 1st XI were the curtain-raiser for them playing against Orewa College.
Being the Curtain-raiser was a huge honor for us and thanks to everyone for making this happen, especially Barb Michelsen (our coach) and the Northland hockey board for helping. The second huge honor for us was that there were 8 former Kamo Intermediate student's in the Black Sticks Team;
Left-to-Right: Anna Thorpe, Stacey Michelsen, Alana Millington, Sam Harrison, Laura Douglas, Jan Burrows, Ella Gunson and Chalotte Harrison.
THE CURTAIN-RAISER
KIS Girls 1st XI vs OREWA COLLEGE
This was the first serious game we have had this season, as we had only had trial games leading up to this game, Orewa were in the same boat as us and had to travel up here to Whangarei as well. We had a good win, but later in the year, Orewa would like to have a rematch down there and we hope this will happen. Thank you so much to Orewa College, their coaches and all the supporters who made the trip up here to Whangarei!!!
BLACK STICKS vs ARGENTINA
This was a fast and intense tussle. Of course we all cheered when any of our girls touched the ball but the speed and skills on display were breath taking. The first half was great for the Black Sticks, with some great attacking opportunities and some great defence and we went up 1-0 with a goal to Cath Finlayson. But the second half was a complete turnaround with the Argentinian speed and their stick skills gaining the upper hand and Maria D'Elia scored the equalizer to get back to 1-1 and finish the game with a draw.
The 2nd test in Auckland didn't go the Black Sticks way with a 6-1 defeat to Argentina before a fired-up Black Sticks team came back in the 3rd test to win 2-1 in a tribute match to Amanda Hooper (nee Christie) to draw the series.
