Attending the NZ Intermediate "Aims Games" was a huge success for the K.I.S Hockey Girls.
This was attributed not only to the individual members of the team stepping up to compete in a national competition against some schools with student populations of over 1000 children, but also to the tremendous management and support team. Leonie Reed, Deb Pittam and Erika McKean were marvelous with their efforts to ensure the children were well feed, hydrated and well rested for the tournament style hockey.
Two games per day for five days was a big ask for some as they had not experienced competing in a hockey tournament before. To finish pool play as the only team unbeaten and with no goals scored against them was a credit to the girls. The only blotch was losing the Semi-Final to eventual Champions Otumoetai Intermediate, who were the only team to score against us 0-2.
Mr Nic told us the best thing about the tournament was not that they came third (although he was understandably proud of the result) but the fact that the team spirit was so strong not only among the players, but with the team, coaches and parents. The best example was after losing the semi-final and with Mrs Michelsen also losing her mother the same week, were they down in the dumps . . . not by a long shot, they were proud, happy and their warm down ended with a huge group hug around Barb.
