KAMO INTERMEDIATE AWARDS
Tauira Awards - Principal Stripe - Channel 'K' Award
- End Of Term One -
A parent
emailed us to explain what a "Tauira Award" was as their child had
received one. This gave us an opportunity to explain to everyone not
only what a Tauira Award is, but to also give an explanation of 2 other
Awards given out during the year.
These 3 are probably the most prestigious outside of the End Of Year Awards given out at the final Prize-giving Assembly.
TAUIRA AWARD:
"Tauira" - An example, someone to follow and model yourself on.
Teachers
from each class are asked to nominate up to 3 students for this award
at the end of each term. Students that are nominated need to be
deserving and other staff members must agree as well.
In the
early part of the year, Year-8 students are most likely to be nominated
to receive this award. If Year-7 students are nominated then they have
no higher award until they become a Year-8 (Principal Stripe), so they
need to be pretty fantastic in all round participation and leadership.
The criteria for selection of a Tauira Award are as follows:
(a) Not already be a holder of a Tauira Award. [IMPORTANT]
(b) have shown themselves to be conscientious and industrious; a reliable and consistent pupil in all aspects of classroom work,
and
(c) by
nature of their attitude, effort, behaviour, dress, deportment and
general participation in school life; have impressed as a worthwhile,
co-operative and dependable pupil, bringing credit to themselves, their
class and the school.
So a "Tauira Award is a very prestigious Award and all holders of this must be very proud of their achievement.
PRINCIPAL STRIPE:
Each class
teacher can select up to 2 students for this award. Nominated students
must meet the following criteria to be eligible:
(i) Must be a Year-8 student.
(ii) Already have a Tauira Award and a minimum of three other stripes from at least 2 other categories.
(iii) Worked well in the classroom achieving to an above average standard given their individual abilities.
(iv) Are co-operative, considerate and aware of others limitations.
(v) consistently show a good sportsmanship in all situations.
(vi) Is
involved with extra school activities outside the classroom - music,
drama, sport, extra jobs both in class and around the school.
(vii) Is prepared to lead in a positive support role.
(viii) has the ability to organise.
(ix) relates well to students and adults.
(x) wears uniform properly and respectfully at all appropriate times.
CHANNEL 'K' AWARD:
Only 1
student per class is nominated for this award each term. Students can
only receive it once. These students must embody the schools Channel
'K' mantra and Year-7 and Year-8 students are eligible.
Well that
the last news from Term One. Remember that Kamo Intermediate now has a
video magazine "Channel 'K' Presents . . . so if you want to catch up
on what has happened have a look.
(EACH EPISODE IS UNDER THE "Inter(MEDIA)te" MENU)

One of the unique events at Kamo Intermediate is the annual Overseas Educational Tours. This year was the fifth visit to Vanuatu and the sixth Tour of Samoa.
39 students travelled to The "Happiest people in the World" Vanuatu, staying at Hideaway Island for 4 days before moving to the Melanesian to stay for the final 3 days. Awesome snorkeling, the Secret Garden where you get to hold Iguana's, coconut crabs and a White Boa Snake. They also went to the Cascade Falls, sliding down rocks and swimming under the waterfalls.
Ekasup Cultural Village was a highlight, as well as Paradise Cave and Turtle Bay. But the places we'll remember the most were the schools we visited, Pango Point, Mele Village and Eton Village schools. Although they were initially shy, the warmth, the generosity and in the end the gifts they gave to us will be remembered for a very long time.
Thanks to the Parents who helped raise the money, The parent helpers who travelled with us, a great bunch of kids and teachers who were on board and of course all the people we met over there. As one of students said "we hope we allowed to go back and visit" . . . I'm sure we will be!!!
