FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
Monday 4th February 2008

WELCOME – KIA ORA – HOWDY

Another year of LIFE at Kamo Intermediate has arrived, and as with new beginnings we always have new faces.

300 Brand New Year-7 students are now part of the Whanau (family) and we have 2 new teachers and reshuffling of some of the veterans.

TENA KOUTOU (Hello People)
New Room 10 Teacher - Mrs Ngaire Rolleston and New Student Councellor Mrs Jenny Ladd.

Joining us from by way of Dubai, Tijurkistan and Otahuhu Primary is Room 10 Teacher Mrs Ngaire Rolleston. We welcome her to Kamo Intermediate and the Tawa Syndicate.

Also newly appointed is Mrs Jenni Ladd who will be our Student Support Teacher. She has taught around most of the local schools and has been a relief teacher for us in the past. Glad to have you on the team!

Finally Mr Mike Allan will be the new Music Maestro while Mr Hughes is on leave, he is also a familiar face to us as he has been relieving around our school as well.

KA KITE ANO (We’ll See You Again)
After 12 years teaching here and being Matai Syndicate Leader Mrs Janeen Soderling has decided to move on and start something new. We wish her all the best for the future.

The new teacher in Room 10 is courtesy of the brand new healthy baby boy that our Mrs Jo Gunson had during the Xmas break. Well done and have a wonderful time with your family Jo.

We have to say goodbye to the lovely Mrs Carolyn Garvitch, who has moved on to the greener pastures of Portland School where she will team teach with the Principal up there. One of the team who helped organise the Bernina Fashion Awards and N.A.F.F for the past 4 years we will miss her

Also leaving us (but only on a years leave) is Room 13 Teacher and Tawa Syndicate leader Mrs Grant (ex-Miss E or Miss Easterbrook) who got married during the break and will join us from time to time as a relief teacher. She will be concentrating her time between their orchard and our school!

NEKENEKE (Moving Around)
As with past years we have classes and staff moving around:

Now teaching in Room 13 is Mrs Seletto (our Maths Guru) who has temporarily moved from the Student Support Office to teach in Tawa.

Room 3 and Miss Nelley have moved to Nikau (becoming Nikau C), Mrs Smith and Nikau C are now known as Room 7, Mrs Headley is the new Matai Syndicate Leader and her students are now in Room 8. Mr Kini is the 2008 Tawa Syndicate Leader and Nikau Support Teacher Mrs Julie Williams is now Team teaching in Room 5 with Mrs O’Connor. I think that’s all the changes.

WARRINER & EVES VISIT FOR THE "KIDS TRIATHLON"
Friday 22nd February 2008
Olympic Triathlete Sam Warriner and Norhtern Advocate Sports Editor Tim Eves

On the 22nd February we had 2 very special visitors come and talk to our students, Mr Tim Eves (Sports Editor for the Northern Advocate) and New Zealand Olympic Team member (and former KIS Teacher) Sam Warriner.

Sam Warriner and Tim Eves came to our school to promote the Allens’ Kids Triathlon, which is taking place on Sunday 9th March. In the past Kamo Intermediate has been hugely represented and we hope this year is no exception.

If you are near the course in Onerahi go and support all the kids who have entered, you never know one of them could be the next “Triathlete Star” just like Sam Warriner.

GIRLS GOLF DAY A HIT!
- Friday 4th April 2008 -
(Article Courtesy Of Ann Hood)
Friday 4 April 2008 saw 11 teams of 4 girls turn up to “give golf a go” at the Pines Golf Club.  Teams came from Whangarei and Kamo Intermediate, Ngunguru, Tikipunga and Waitoira Primary.  Golf Development Manager Ann Hood welcomed the girls to the course, gave some basic instruction and encouraged the girls to have FUN!  Off they went to play four shortened holes in their teams.  Soon you could hear shouts of encouragement, laughter and fun aplenty happening out on the course.  The four holes soon turned into eight and at 11 o’clock the teams met back at the clubhouse for a snack and “prizegiving”.  Spot prizes were drawn, and the wonderful members from the Pines decided everyone should go home with a prize and hunted out some more gifts.  Having already received a “goodie bag” when they arrived these prizes topped off a wonderful morning.

The girls were encouraged to go and check out their local golf clubs and given details of junior times etc.  When asked if they would like to do something similar again a resounding YES erupted.

Plans are afoot to run more of these days for girls throughout Northland, as well as having some “Girls Only” golf tournaments for all levels during school holidays.
Special thanks to Plumbing World Kerikeri and Alex Bonnington PGA Pro at Waitangi Golf Club for their assistance with prizes.  Many thanks to the parents, teachers and members of the Pines Golf Club for their wonderful support.

For further information on girls golf contact Ann Hood, Golf Development Manager, 021 2465337.

Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them.”

- Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)

SAVE THE TANIWHA – STOP THE DROP
- 13th August 2008 -
SHAME NZRU . . . SHAME

As all Northlanders everywhere and anywhere who follow rugby know, the Kauri has been felled! The Northland Rugby team “The TANIWHA” has been in our opinion, unfairly dropped from the Air New Zealand Cup!

The NZRU could have waited until the end of the season, with the bottom 2 teams being relegated (if Northland was one of them that would have been fine), but no, we are OUT! No what ifs, how comes or buts, we will be in the Heartland Competition next year. What criteria have they used? Well we don’t know, is it performance, crowd attendance or money?

At least we can count on one thing; we won’t leave without a fight! Join the “Save The Taniwha – Stop The Drop” campaign and let’s show the so called rugby bosses what being BLUE means, in the end all we want is this New Zealand Rugby Union – THINK ABOUT IT.

BERNINA FASHION AWARDS 2008
- 14th August 2008 -

This was the 31st edition of the Bernina Fashion Awards and Kamo Intermediate had 32 entrants this year. The new organisers of the Awards show are the Whangarei South Rotary Club, and they did a great job. Many thanks to Owen, Joy, Megan and all of their helpers.

As for us, Hayley’s (Clark) Creative Arts groups “Versace, Dior and Chanel” created entries for the Masquerade, Wearable Arts, Fantasiwear and Dancing Queen sections, while Hayley herself entered the Body Art and Kings As Queens sections. There were a lot of ex-KIS students who entered and a few of them also won prizes. Of course on of our current crop won, Dani from Room 14 receiving third place in the Dancing Queen section

Thanks to everyone who helped, well done to all those who entered and we hope to see you all again next year at the 32nd Bernina Fashion Awards!

WIS/KIS SHIELD COMPETITION
Tuesday 2nd September 2008

WIS/KIS CHALLENGE

One day every year we have the WIS/KIS Challenge, where 10 teams from each school compete for the Challenge Shield.

Although we have competitions between Kamo Intermediate and Whangarei Intermediate all through the year, this is the biggest day a year when the WIS/KIS contest is at its zenith. The WIS/KIS Challenge is between teams in Basketball, Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Soccer. This year because of weather we had 2 postponements, but on Tuesday 2nd September, we finally could get under way.

Although we had good wins in the Year-8 Boys Rugby (34-10), Boys Hockey (5-2), we ended up losing the challenge 4½ to 5½. Congratulations WIS and Well done KIS on the big improvement from last year.

SPEED GUN COMPETITION
Tuesday 9th September 2008

The annual Speed Gun Competition took place on 9th September. The best of the best were all in the hall with a Year-7 and a Year-8 student representing each class.

Over the previous weeks each classroom had tryouts to see who would be their class reps and 38 students went to the hall to compete. In the final, each competitor had to fill out a ‘basic facts’ grid and it was the first to finish with a 100% correct score to become the Champion. Congratulations to Year-7 Champion Hayley from Room 4 and Year-8 Champion Josh from Room 16. Well done to all who took part and full credit to those who placed.

Year-7 Students
Champion: HAYLEY S - Room 4
2nd: Abbie F - Room 10
3rd: Eli D - NA

Year-8 Students
Champion: JOSH B - Room 16
2nd: Nathan C - Room 6
3rd: Zara W - Room 3

THE DROP HAS BEEN STOPPED
Friday 26th September 2008

Well the NZRU has come to their senses and Northland will be staying in the Air New Zealand Competition. Along with Tasman they have decided to keep the competition to 14 teams, of course there are some stipulations but at least we won’t be going down (especially since we are the best of the Super 14 Auckland Blues feeder teams). We must remember for the coming seasons to
“KEEP IT BLUE…THE TANIWHA RULE”

END OF THE K.I.S YEAR 2008
Wednesday 17th December 2008

As with always, the end of the year means for some the end of their time at K.I.S, and also new possiblities in the future, but mostly it's a time to reflect on what 2008 has been like.

Of course the big changes for next year are, we also get a bunch of new Year-7 children next year to carry on the K.I.S tradition. All of this year's Year-8 students move on to High School and we wish them all the best. . But we also have to say goodbye to some of our staff.

Kyla Cameron - Room 14: Will be going on maternity leave and is moving to Auckland (she was due just before the end of the year) we wish her and the new family the best of health and maybe even a visit some time next year.

Kelly Smith - Room 7: (nee Miss Brown) She is also going on maternity leave and we also give our best to her (as a new mother) and the new family as well. We also hope to get a visit during 2009 as well.

Miss Ngaire - Room 10: a welcome surprise from Tijurkistan (by way of Dubai and Otahuhu Primary). A very experienced teacher who was a welcome surprise. She is going to develop with her partner their Conferencing and Catering Business. We know the future will be a success

Sandra McGregor - Room 9: Former K.I.S student, Kamo High head girl and began her teaching career at K.I.S as well. She and her husband will be travelling overseas during 2009 hopefully teaching in Japan, Egypt or Australia. Good luck and have fun in 2009.

Renee Procter - Room 15: (nee Miss Delaney) is taking a years study leave, but will be coming back during the year to organise the Stage Challenge, Roadshow so we will still see her around K.I.S next year

Angela Seletto - Room 13: Who also began the Student Support position at Kamo Intermediate before going back to the classroom. She and her husband are moving back home to Melbourne Australia to be closer to their families. Thanks for everything cobber!!

Next year we have some new teachers beginning and some old favourites returning. Mrs Jo Gunson (nee Smith) has taken over from Miss Cameron in Room 14 (at the end of November this year), Mrs Jo Grant (nee Easterbrook) will be in Room 10 from 2009. A new teacher to K.I.S, Ms Sarah Butler (formerly of Kerikeri) will be in charge of Room 3 in 2009. Beginning teacher Ms Katie Tonks will be in Room 9, and is also an accomplished dancer.

Well we wish you all a "Merry Xmas", "A Happy New Year" and a very safe and fun Holidays. Let's have a great year in 2009 and remember . . . school starts 8:45am Tuesday 3rd February 2008!!!
