Fire On The Hill
A dancing flame crawls down my timber match and licks around my nimble fingers. I carelessly toss away the match, to be carried on the wind, into the flourishing gorse infestation. Higher and higher the flames gallop, smothering the sky with a strong, strangling smoke; not even enough room for the birds to soar.
A chilly zephyr haunts around the cracks and crevices of the valley. Smoke rides the flame as a singular gorse bush beckons it away with impaling limbs. I drink in this situation with a numb feeling of amazement. I jumped, startled from a spark creeping up my boots, eager to inhabit my tatty shoes.
Up I glance and recognize stark, bare gorse remains: clinging to its roots, then fading into the wind. A somewhat strentorious silence echoes around the valley hills, piercing the atmosphere.
I steal a peek out of the corner of my eye and then turn round abruptly to see the reason why my heart missed a beat. Awe-stricken and dumbfounded I gaze at the crumpled paddock, banished of grass.
