DANGERS OF THE WILD

Crack! Huh? What was that? Friend or foe? Prey or Predator?

Animal survival, possibly one of the greatest games ever played.
I left Kamo Intermediate with an energetic bunch of students, all eager to begin their adventure. We soon arrived at our destination, Whananaki. We walked all the way across the beach to the wood, where we would finally attempt to survive, and with trepidation, entered its depths.

We arrived at the other end of the wood, which had been devastated by the storm. We left our bags in the safe area. Mr Palmer and Mrs Gunson (our host teachers) explained the rules of animal survival, boy there were a lot of them! But, in short: catch everyone you can and don’t get caught yourself! We had four colours: green, blue, yellow and orange. O.k. heres how it goes: Orange eats anything, yellow eats blue and green, blue eats green and greens well, lets just say you better have had a big lunch!

The greens were let off first. You know head start for the suck-I mean prey, ahem. A few minutes later the blues were released. Me among them. Later I heard a roar of triumph as the yellows, the harbingers of death were released, I ran deep into the forest in search of prey. Near the far edge I attacked. I earned myself one life of a kiwi. I was quite triumphant when I saw a glimmer of orange. I got the feeling that it was time to make my triumphant retreat. A few hours had passed and I hadn’t even lost a life! I’d had a close shave with a yellow, but I still escaped with full lives.

Suddenly I glimpsed pink. Deadly pink. Oh no! Damn! Flood, Disease and Wildfire were out and that meant that man was on the horizon. I ran and let my instincts guide me back to the safe spot. But a certain teacher was missing! That could only mean one thing… Man!! Many victims of man were there, all dead, well so to speak. A kid came to the spot with news: Man was at the other end of the wood. Once I had heard that, I knew that I had defeated animal survival. Without losing even one life.
