FORCED TO BE FROZEN

(INTENSIVES 2007)

I hang there, like a confused baby spider discovering it’s legs for the first time. Playing twister on a vertical limestone wall.

Except 1. I’m not as light as a baby spider and 2. I’m not playing twister. I’m heavy and I’m scared and I’m not going to move any time soon. So here I am frozen by fear, crammed into a narrow crack in cold, hard limestone, absolutely and completely squashed.

Uh oh please don’t, please don’t but it’s too late, my harness just got caught on the edge of the rock behind me, great I’m hanging on the edge of a sharp rock by a humungous wedgie! The jeering rock face taunts me daring me to get help, make a scene. But I’m not going to of course not, I got myself into this, I’ll get myself out, even if it takes all day, well maybe not all day, but you know what I mean.

But still I hang after what feels like hours, rooted to the spot, immobile. Ok, ok, I can do this it might take a while but I’ll do it. I lift my aching left leg and lunge towards the nearest hand hold above me, I’m about to grab it and…………
“No, No, don’t go there, go here.”
“No here.” “Not there, go to your right.”
“No left.”
The instructions come pouring in like an overflowing dam and a tsunami of suggestions come rushing in at the same time. Slowly and painfully I fall on a sharp edge, “oh no” I sigh, “I shouldn’t have moved!”
