SNORKLING TRIP

McGregor’s Bay peeked over the horizon. A troop of Kamo Intermediate students from Nikau ‘A’, rolled over the hills into the Bay in an army of cars. Macey and I abruptly stopped the music from the stereo. “Everybody over here” cried Mr. Palmer. A sudden bang of car doors flying open rung with the air and the waves.

Samara, our instructor, bellowed out for our Attention… A pack of heads turned to face her. “OK! Now just a few safety rules.” A file of rules were cooed out and all of Nikau ‘A’ faced Samara drinking in every word…” So now, lets sort you into groups”

Nikau ‘A’ was shuffled into two groups. One group for activities on the beach and another for snorkeling! Luck was on my side as I was thrown into the snorkeling group first. Suddenly, a mad ruckus of student scrambled towards the snorkeling gear. 2 flippers, a wetsuit and a snorkel later the snorkeling group strode towards the rocks. “Now, you have to promise me to not scream” instructed Samara. “You might see a stingray” Foolishly, being me I let out a scream but quickly disguised it with a cough.

Waves and sand enclosed around my group as a feeling of extreme chilliness wrapped around us. With a kick, flap and smack we were off. Underwater is eerie sometimes…But not today. The water was full of frantic screeches at he sighting of a fish or nervous snorkels paddling with their group. The seaweed slowly bowed and swayed in the tide.

“Arggggghhhhhh” A loud scream erupted “ OH MY GOSH…It’s a Stingray’. I dove down eager to see the stingray and glimpsed a group of kids hovering over a patch of seaweed. Crouching delicate on the sand was a stingray…

                                                      *            *             *
Over the Sand dunes appeared a crowd of my group with chattering teeth. “Line up over here please” Cried a teacher on the shore. Our booklets were handed out and we set off on an unprotected marine area scavenger hunt. As that closed to an end we performed a few Adventure Based learning activities.

Then, dragging their feet, the other snorkeling group appeared and suddenly the day was a slow process of packing up.

At last, I sprung out of the car onto Kamo Intermediate soil, still damp and full of sand, and with memories still in mind.

SAMOA

By Iain

I treaded softly among the corpses below . . . OK I’m not really walking over dead people, I’m walking on the Lava Fields at Saleaula on the Samoan Island of Savai’i.

The Lava Fields destroyed a village about 100 years ago and was one of the sights we went to when Kamo Intermediate travelled to Samoa!

By far the best thing I experienced over there was “SWIMMING WITH THE TURTLES”, at the Turtle Sanctuary just down from Manase Village. There was one turtle that was 60 years old (young for a turtle) who would come up and hug people while you were in the pool. Also you could hang onto their shell and they would pull you along in the water.

Another cool place to visit over there are the “Sliding Rocks” in Papasee’a. These are a waterfall that you can slide down and you can also jump off them. There they have a big slide and a small slide.

KIS Adventurers if you ever get the chance to go to Samoa on the next Educational Tour . . . TAKE IT!!!
