VANUATU TOUR
By Alana H
(KidzBiz Journalist 2006 & Vanuatu Visitor)

A warm breeze caressed my face as I stepped off the plane to encounter a loud group of Vanuatu’s best singing and dancing bands looking so alive and full of energy at four in the morning!

I must say I was blown away by the rush of excitement that was in the air, once the Vanuatu singing group performed one of their traditional songs, whenever a plane load of tourists arrived they performed again… and again… and again! They must have been doing the night shift. Arriving in Vanuatu was a real culture shock. They don’t have the things we do, we have a tight T.V schedule for every day of the week, Neighbours, Friends, Shortland Street, Desperate Housewives, and they don’t even have TV’s!

A day in the life of your typical Vanuatu child would go something like this…
Wake up early, make what’s left of your wooden plank bed, have your cherished glass of not–so clean water and maybe a piece of bread or fruit for your breakfast.

You waddle down the street the road to your down–sized “School” and you write in your one treasured book that brings you such joy you just have to express emotion by song. You and your class sing with such passion that it’s almost too overwhelming for those seeing for the first time. Once you run out of voice it is now time for your much needed lunch–break, you rush home and greet your family, say your grace and eat your holy meal, containing a small cup of water, maybe some meat and fruit.

But you soon realise the moment must end and you will continue on with your school work. That afternoon you have a pretty laid – back couple of hours, still keeping 100% focus and your work as neat as neat can be. You soon return home to your family to have your tea and as you fall off to sleep smiling, awaiting for another wonderful day in the life of your typical Vanuatu child. Vanuatu was an amazing experience one I will never forget, I encourage all year seven’s to go on this tour whether it be Vanuatu, Fiji or Samoa dive in and indulge yourself into this memory…
