How Do YOU Measure . . . A Year In A Life?”

* TERM ONE *
START OF 2006
8th February 2006
The school had a pretty big shuffle around for 2006, with the new look
”Nikau Syndicate” (3 classes up on the hill as one big group). The New Syndicate Leader is
Mrs. Hudspith (formerly Rimu, Room 15) joining her are former
Room 10 teacher Miss. Brown (Tawa) and from
Matai Mr. Palmer (Artist formerly known as Room 9).
The other re-shuffles mean
CONGRATULATIONS to Toni Mason and her healthy baby boy Brady. Moving to Ms. Mason’s old
Room 5 is Mrs. Hedley and her class (from Room 20), in
Room 9 are Mrs. Garvitch and Mrs. O’Connor (from Room 19) and now in
Room 15 is Miss. Delaney from Nikau’s Room 20. Also Ms. de Bruin is taking a years study leave so stepping in for 2006
Mrs. J Nicholson is in the Textile and Design Room.
Some new faces in the staffroom are
Mr. Foster arriving from Maunu Primary in Room 10 (Mr. Smith denies rumours he’s here because he can play golf) and
Mrs. Tebbutt moving from Matarau School over to Room 16. Finally Mrs. Seletto is now in the office as the Pastoral & Care Liaison Officer after last year being Syndicate Leader up in Nikau.
Term 1 we began with
”Tabloids”, which are fun games that the kids do in rotation.
”Lunchtime Sports” has begun with the first World Championship contested being
SCATTERBALL. Also beginning in the afternoons are the
Specialists Focus Groups, Kowhai Syndicate is the 1st to take advantage with Matai taking over later in the term. Also in Term 1 we have the
Class Camps.
So remember “Be The BEST You Can Be” and to quote a famous Boxing Referee & Judge ”LETS GET IT ON!” - Bring on 2006

CLASS CAMPS
"School Life" Term 1
At the beginning of each year (mostly during Term One) the Kamo Intermediate classes go to different camps, just to get to know each other, do some team bonding and have a lot of FUN!!!
Sometimes the unexpected happens, at one of this years camps they had a huge wind storm come thru and rip up 1 tent while blowing down another 4 tents (they had to stay up to 4am trying to keep things together). At a different camp a K.I.S staff member (who will remain nameless) had to be rescued from some mud flats (getting carried out by one of the parents). This staff member, also after an hour of sailing got exactly . . . NOWHERE!!!
But what happens on camp . . . stays on camp.

The local winter sports competitions have started and Kamo Intermediate have Netball and Hockey teams competing. This year we have 87 girls in 10 KIS Netball teams playing on Saturday mornings (that’s a big group) and we have 52 girls in 4 Hockey teams playing on Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. (If your anywhere near Kensington Sports Ground drop in and watch)

E Noho Ra Miss Duff!!
9th May 2006
One of our charismatic stars is leaving the KIS whanau and heading on a grand overseas adventure. Room 16 beginning (or baby) teacher Miss Jess Duff is heading on safari to South Africa before travelling on to England and Europe for a 2 year working holiday.
We hope Miss Duff and her partner a safe and exciting trip as they leave on the 13th of May (were expecting e-mails and pictures). We'll all remember her smile and her pizza eating record (at the staff golf tournament 2005)
Ka kite ano Jess. (Becareful of Mud Flats and Sailing Boats hehehehe)

LET’S GET INVENTIN’
TV2 Sunday Nights 5pm
TVNZ have a show on TV2 this year called ◊
Let’s Get Inventin’ ◊. The really cool thing about the show is that of the 24 young kiwi inventors featured, 4 are former Kamo Intermediate students.
Sarah Trass (BuoyZone), Jason Wordsworth (Water Gate), Kieran Pullman (Scrunge Pitz Surf Buggy) & Ben Currie (Bush Balloon).
Congratulations to all our young “Rutherfords”, we’re proud of all your accomplishments. Who knows what you will inspire in today’s Kamo Intermediate students, especially with our Science Fair coming soon.
(Let’s Get Inventin’ broadcasts on Sunday at 5pm, TV2 with repeat screenings on Saturday 11am)

FIRST K.I.S SOCIAL
1st June 2006
Finally we’ve had our first School Social for this year. With one of the biggest crowds for many years (about 360 students, a few teachers and some lovely parents) it was one of the best ‘Socials’ for many years.
Lots of dancing (mainly by
DanceMasta Vdub) and some cool (and not so cool) music (by
PhunkMasta P) there were a lot of people dancing, laughing and having fun. Apart from the DanceMasta’s sore neck there were no incidents on the dance floor. Thanks to all our helpers, the Grasshoppers and everyone for enjoying themselves.
(See yall next Social)

Ka kite Ano Miss McQuinn
22nd September 2006
The last day of term 3 also meant the last day for one of our staffroom stars. Miss Jessie McQuinn is heading off for her awfully big overseas adventure. She’s heading over to London and then travelling around Europe (watch out Spain and Italy).
As a beginning (or baby) teacher, she has taught in Room 11 since she graduated from Training College and being a former student knew she wanted to start her teaching career here! Also being a top Northland Hockey Rep, she has coached the A Grade KIS team for the last couple of years.
Enjoy your travels Jessie, we’ll remember your smile, your dancing and your facials
(At least Mr. Smith’s Lolly Jar will be safe)

INTENSIVES (3 days of Out of the Ordinary Activities), the
Year-8 Vanuatu and Samoan Tours, then it’s the

It is so HUGE that you have to say it "three times". What is it? Well its 3 days of Exciting, Exhilarating and Exhausting activities. the students get to choose either 3 day activities (which are activities you do for the whole 3 days) or 1 day activities (where they can choose a different adventure for each day). The range of activities is enormous and so are the memories, most students may not remember how to use photoshop but they all remeber what they did for intensives.

3rd December 2006
Kamo Intermediate student - Martin in Room 6 got to meet his (and a few of the teachers) hero, New Zealand golfer
Michael Campbell when he attended a junior golf clinic at Chamberlain Park, Auckland after the NZ Golf Open. Martin (who’s on an 18 handicap) was invited, along with other junior golfers around the region to the event.
During the Question & Answer session, Martin put his hand up and asked if anyone other than him had ever hit
Cambo’s Driver. After saying no, Michael turned back, asked his name and then got Martin to come up and have a hit. After nailing the drive he later got a picture with Michael, he was also taped and shown on the network news on channel one. After seeing the photos and hearing the story, there were a lot of excited golfers/teachers practising their golf swings around school.

At Kamo Intermediate one of our strong suits is the KIS Hockey Programme. A lot of Representative Hockey Players have passed through our school gate, the latest notable stars being Charlotte Harrison who is the youngest member of the current NZ Black Sticks Squad (this being her second year) and our latest Black Stick Laura Douglas.
Of course we have had a huge number of National Age Group Reps, but in the 2006
Northland Women’s Hockey Team we have
"TEN" former KIS Students, they Are:
TANIA CRENE - Northland Women’s Hockey Captain (who will also be teaching in Tawa's Room 11 during the Fourth Term).
LAURA DOUGLAS - (Northlands latest Black stick, who's father Ross works here every now and then).
KELSEY DUNN - (who's sister is currently in the KIS 'A' Grade team).
CHARLOTTE HARRISON - (youngest Black Stick and former Room 5 student).
ALANA MILLINGTON - The only student to win both the Citizenship and Sportsperson Awards in the same year.
CARLI MICHELSEN and
STACY MICHELSEN - (Who's Mum works in the Resource Room).
JASMIN MCQUINN and
JESSIE MCQUINN - our Room 11 Teacher (who will be leaving the KIS Whanau to do her 'OE').
ANNA THORPE - (Who attended KIS at the same time as Laura Douglas).
Also closely related to the “KIS Whanau” is
NICKI ATTWOOD (who did her section training here in Room 13).
So just imagine what could happen, with hard work, lots of dedication and training, training, training to our current crop of Hockey Players and where they might end up in the future.
(Remember only 4 years ago Charlotte was still here in Mrs Battersby’s class in Kowhai Syndicates Room 5!)
