SLAVING OVER SCIENCE FAIR
By Alana H
In the two free weeks they had (their holidays), Kamo Intermediate kids
slaved over a science board day and night, sweat dripping from their
forehead, big purple bags under their eyes, but when they saw the
finished product they were GOBSMACKED! (And so were their teachers!)
Yes! The Science Fair is back in town and ready to rock! As soon as
the news broke out some were buzzing about, ready to take it on, others
simply dropped dead like flies. The Science Fair is there to encourage
kids in science and to embrace their creative skills. As I said before
the kids worked hard all holidays and they were really impressed by the
quality of theirs and others work!
Second day back. Pressures on, you could smell determination in the
air. As nearly seventy five percent of the population of Kamo
Intermediate pile into the school hall there is chaos! Once the
students have all placed their boards into the hall the “Ohhh’s” and
“Ahhh’s” begin. All the school gets a chance to re-live all the hard
work and effort their fellow classmates have put into their Science
Fair projects!
Soon after everyone has seen the creations, the winners are chosen
and the runners up are awarded with consolation prizes. Every
participant in the Science Fair receives a stripe and everyone comes
out looking and feeling happy, accomplished and sparkly! (Oh, and with
one more stripe!)
WITAJCIE
(Welcome in Polish)
Term 2 is rapidly coming to an end.
It has been an eventful term with many sporting challenges. The
first of these events was the inter-class table tennis championship.
After two weeks of competitive gaming, a final championship match was
played. Rooms 5 and Nikau C battled it out. Nikau C claimed victory,
though closely followed by a team of fantastic players from Room 5 who
gave it their best shot. In the plate final Room 14 won whilst Room 6
came in runner up.
Next of these sporting events was the Winter Sports day. The majority
of Kamo Intermediate pupils participated in these games. We all had an
awesome day!
The third of these events was the bowls tournament. The results
were: Championship winner Room 6 and runner up Room 14. In the Plate
Room 3 of Kowhai came out victorious while Nikau B came a close second
place.
Finally, the most anticipated sporting event was held on Wednesday 13th
June. The KIS/WIS challenge! Sadly we suffered an unfortunate defeat to
our rival school, Whangarei Intermediate. We all tried our hardest and
had lots of fun. We displayed to our rival school, our talent for being
The Best That We Can Be!
We have had another fantastic term at KIS with the Social being yet another highlight of the term.
Everyone have a great holiday and see you back in Term 3.
TWO TRIUMPHANT "LIT QUIZ" TEAMS RETURN VICTORIOUS!
By Kate W
Books, books and more books! Kamo Intermediate annually competes in a
regional competition - “The Literature Quiz”. This year’s competition
was held in Kaikohe. Fifteen Northland schools aggressively competed
for the title of “Regional Representative”- vying for the chance to
represent Northland in the National Championships.
Students selected for the teams have a wide range of detailed
knowledge about literature… books, books and more books! The students
are questioned, in teams, on their knowledge of books in various
categories - humour, love, bears, comic titles and “baddies” were just
a few.
The Kamo Intermediate teams consisted of: Aleisha M (NB), Daisy M
(5), Kate W (NC), Carla H (10), Stephanie L (17), Liam S (3), Thomas N
(NA) and Sam A (18).
These students represented their school with passion, skill and
dedication - securing both third and fourth places in this competition.
Outstanding representatives!
AFIO MAI
(Welcome in Samoan)
The first few weeks of term have been extremely busy and the classes have been working hard!
So far Rimu leads the inter-house rivalry with an outstanding 640
points. A lot of these points were won during the interclass softball
challenge. Room 17 won the championship with Room 15, also from Rimu as
runner-up. Room 18, another Rimu class won the plate final and Room 13
from Tawa came in second place.
Alana H (Nikau) won the Year 8 Reading Competition last term while
Alana C (Nikau) won the Year 7 Reading Comp. Second place in the Year 8
division went to Gabbi T in Room 15, and Third equal to Rachel E, Kate
M and Travis D. The Year 7 Second place went to Evan L with Brooke J
taking Third place. Alana H and Alana C received a rare Champion Stripe and will be presented with a cup at the end of the year.
Winter Sports is coming up on Tuesday the 23rd May and students are
quickly getting fit and practicing hoping to win some games. Table
Tennis started this term. Four kids represented each class. Two Year7’s
and two Year8’s played against each other to make it to the top and win
their syndicate more points. This is an example of Kamo Intermediate
student’s being The Best They Can Be.
KIA ORANA
(Welcome in Cook Islands)
Welcome to the last Gazette for Term One. At the moment Tawa is
winning in the syndicate points. Tawa has a massive amount of points,
190 to be exact.
The Year 8’s have finished their 4th lesson in the Life Education
Caravan with Nadine. There has been 4 great sessions, which will help
us with our dramatic decisions that we shall face as we grow up. Year
8’s have thoroughly enjoyed the lessons and got a big surprise when
Harold the giraffe popped up to sing a song to them.
During “Tug of War” there has been great tugging and pulling with
huge amounts of energy and excitement. After a couple of weeks Rm 10
won the Championship with Rm 3 runner-up. Rm 14 secured the wooden
plate with Rm13 the runner up.
Sad news as KIS lost the shield to WIS in the swimming event. Don’t worry we shall win the shield back soon!
Now we say goodbye, enjoy your holidays and Be The Best That You Can Be!
